Over the past year I've had, oh about 10 fitness friends individually tell me that I have to take a Soul Cycle class and when they recently opened a location within walking distance from my home, I decided it was time.

I like to work out early in the morning so I signed up for the 6AM class. I know I'm crazy but there's something about getting my workout done before the city wakes up that just jazzes me to my core.

I love that feeling walking home, knowing I did something great for my body-endorphins pumping through my veins, feeling psyched, focused, and ready for the day.

Anyway, back to Soul Cycle. If you've never taken a class, it's pretty sweet. As the name infers, they combine spinning with inspiration.

Like other indoor cycling classes, you cycle to high-energy music with the instructor on her headset getting you fired up and the lights turned down low (Soul Cycle also has not-real candles set up around the room which makes it feel more intimate too).

I love working out (or dancing) in the dark because it totally lets you go inside your head. When a really good song comes, I get a burst of energy and my body just moves!

And today, I was doing my thing, sweatin' it out to a Katy Perry, Led Zepplin remix when the instructor said something that pushed a button deep within... my soul.

I don't know why because I've heard it before and say it to my clients almost every day, but still... it hit me.

She said, "WHY are you doing this?"  "Why do you get up at 5AM to come here?" She shouted. "Because it's not about the scale!!"

Yeah! WHY do I do this? Who does this (besides the other 10 people in this class and the plethora of other people at gyms and cycle classes all around the city right now)?!

The first thing that popped into my mind was, I don't know, it's just what I do. But I know better than that.

Walking home from class I knew I had to share this today.

WHY do YOU do what you do?

Why are you committed to what you're committed to?

When we know our WHY, we're connected and clear, and we lay our head down on our pillow at night and feel fulfilled.

But when we're not connected, then this question can be confusing or even frustrating.

WHY do you do what you do? It's not just about "getting there" because once you get to that goal that you have your sights set on, you'll already have another goal set for yourself. This I know from experience!

On my bike this morning, sweat dripping down my arms, elbow to elbows with the friendly girl next to me (yes, you are that close, which made me slightly nervous about all those garlic cloves I ate last night with my roasted chicken dinner), with the house music pumping... I was in my zone.

And when the instructor asked this question and said it's go time (time to stand up and peddle it home), I proclaimed in my mind, my WHY:

Sheila, I am doing this for you. I am doing this for the life you've created for yourself. For this amazing body that you have right now, that has always been there for you. I'm doing this for the life you dream of. For the inspiration, the love, that surrounds you and pours through you when you are aligned with who you really are. For Ryan. For your family. For bliss. For prosperity. Let's do this. I am ready. I'm ready.

It may sound cheesy, but connecting with yourself like this, whether it's through exercise, meditation, journaling, etc is so healing.

So the next time you're feeling a little disconnected, maybe a sweaty spin class in the dark with an awesome playlist is exactly what you need to do a little healing.
