Over the holiday, I've had my share of cookies and cocktails. Christmas Eve with the family included both, plus appetizers, prime rib, mashed potato, and other goodies.

A few days later I met up with my sister at a fun speak easy for "sisters cocktail night."

Then my Dad came to town and we went out for burgers. And then of course there's New Years Eve.

If you're anything like I used to be, all this celebrating with food and drink might make you uneasy.

But for me now, I know that it's okay.

I trust my body and my body trusts me. I eat what satisfies me and makes me feel comfortably full and able to partake in the festivities, and then I stop... and I don't feel guilty about it.

I allow myself to enjoy the holidays without judgment or worry about eating too much because I know that any bloat or puffiness goes away after a few days of my usual way of eating.

It's taken me some time and practice to get here, but this is how I "do" the holidays now.

As you enter into the new year, check in with yourself on this.

Remove guilt from your vocabulary.

Use 2014 -- this "new slate" -- as a time to bring great awareness to your relationship with food and your body.

Experiment. Tune in and listen to what your body is asking for, give it to yourself, and then stop when your body says it's had enough.

This goes for everything - food, drink, and even things like exercise, sleep, and celebration (going out on the town, etc...).

A happy life is just a string of happy moments. But most people don't allow the happy moment, because they're so busy trying to get a happy life.
